Pastoral Scene

France, early 1730s

François Boucher (1703–1770) was the creator of the Rococo style in painting. He was an exceptionally famous and popular artist. Versailles and the mansions of the French aristocracy were inundated with his works. He was considered first painter to King Louis XV and over the years he held the posts of Director of the Royal Academy and of the Royal Gobelins Factory. A few months before his death, he was elected an honorary member of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. While leading a comfortable existence, with no shortage of admirers and commissions, he found time to produce series of illustrations for the works of Ovid, Boccaccio and Molière, to paint curtains and devise sets for theatres, to make cartoons from which tapestries would be woven and to suggest decoration for porcelain. His oeuvre was exceptionally diverse: he turned his hand to mythological and allegorical subjects, painted rural fairs and Parisian life, full of high society amusements, official receptions and carousels, genre scenes, portraits, landscapes and pastorals… It is customarily considered that the meaning of one of Boucher’s paintings is straightforward and amounts to nothing more than the entertainment value of the subject, but the artist’s canvases are marked by a special festive colouring, the sight of which alone is sufficient to instantly conjure up the age of Madame de Pompadour. This Pastoral Scene was painted in the early 1730s, when after his studies François Boucher returned to Paris from Rome, where he had done a lot of copying and had begun to collect Tiepolo’s drawings. In Italy, he became acquainted with the principles of monumental decorative painting, which he boldly carried over into genre scenes.
