On 16-17 December 2014, a reporting archaeological session took place in the State Hermitage Museum.
Traditionally, archaeology is one of the most important fields of concern for the Hermitage; it is closely related to the museum research and exhibition work. At the annual reporting sessions the heads of the museum archaeological expeditions present the results of the last season and talk about future plans. In 2014, 22 Hermitage expeditions carried out excavations in the vast territories in Russia and abroad: from the North-West of Russia to the Altai, the Crimea, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Italy. Expeditions to Belarus and Chersonesus were resumed this year after a long break. One of the important activities of the archaeologists of the State Hermitage Museum is monitoring the construction works on the territory of the State Hermitage Museum complex. New archaeological research methods, in particular, underwater archaeology and geophysical surveys, are developing. As usual, the presenters paid special attention to the scientific analysis of the obtained results in the historical context, as well as to the issues of restoration and preservation of archaeological sites.
